Airbnb chalets and rentals in Zermatt offer a fair choice of reasonable properties but it did not satisfy what I was looking for. The Airbnb Zermatt luxury ski chalets are overpriced, overrated and under booked and there is good reason for this.
I have always been a fan of Airbnb due to the fact I believed I would get a better deal going direct to the owner rather than booking through an agency or third party website. I have used it a few times and again, if I am honest, I have had a fair experience with the site. The properties I rented were nice but I could certainly tell that it belonged to someone else due to the cupboards, shelves and other storage units being filled with the owners items! The property offered a place to stay but certainly didn’t give the relaxing luxurious holiday feel I was looking for.
I then looked a little deeper into the pricing scheme of Airbnb and was surprised. I found that it was actually cheaper to book through an agency (or, in the rare situation where I could find a telephone number for the owner on the internet, cheaper directly with the owner)! Due to Airbnb’s high fees I found that a typical Zermatt luxury chalet would cost up to 12% more than booking through an agency due to the fact that owners raise their property prices on the site rather than agencies who need to compete to keep the price the same!
