The pristine ski town of Zermatt is a world famous tourist destination. Known for its famous views of the mighty Matterhorn and car free policy’s, travellers return year after year to indulge in its beauty. The town is located between two valleys with scenic natural views at every corner. All of the rental Chalets located in Zermatt can be reached in less than a 20 minute walk from the centre of the town.
Apart from all of the Zermatt chalets rentals, the town has plenty of Luxury shops, Fine restaurants and Lively bars to keep you occupied after a day’s ski (or for the entire day!). Although most people tend to visit for 7 days, most of the Zermatt town can been seen in 3 (also making for a perfect weekend retreat).
How To Get There
The no cars policy means that you won’t be able to drive and park directly at your Zermatt chalet. All of Zermatt’s tourists access their chalet rental by the main train station, a drop off at the Zermatt taxi drop off point or by private helicopter charter. There is also the option to arrive in Zermatt already on your skis or snowboard by skiing in from Cervinia. Once in Zermatt, access around town is quick and easy with the multitude of Electro taxis and horse drawn carts. Walking around Zermatt is also an extremely popular option due to its relatively small size.
Driving to Zermatt can sometimes be one of the more expensive options due to the many tolls across Europe. Drivers usually park their car in Tasch (with over 3000 car parking spaces) and then jump onto the shuttle train which will take you to central Zermatt in around 12 minutes. Trains depart from Tasch every 20 minutes.
The 2 most popular airports to travel to are Zurich or Geneva. From Zurich it will take a further 3.5 hours by train or taxi and from Geneva it will take a further 4 hours by train or taxi. The closest airport to Zermatt is Sion which will take a further 2 hours by train or 1.5 hours by taxi (helicopter charter is the more popular option from this airport and will take around 15 minutes).
Hourly trains run from both Zurich airport and Geneva airport although one change will be required from both. From Zurich a change will be required at Brig and from Geneva a change will be required at Visp. After either change you will be brought to central Zermatt.
Zermatt skiing is world famous and hugely popular due to its repeat high snow record, the variety of runs and the fact that it is the highest resort in Europe. Skiing is possible 365 days a year! Zermatt offers 360 km of skiable piste as well as uncountable kilometers of off piste. Cervina, which is Zermatt’s neighbour town across the border into Italy is also a skiable option too. The highest point, Klein Matterhorn sits at 3883 m, which will give you the finest clear views of the Matterhorn with an awesome ski back to the town.
The pistes are well maintained and cater for all levels of ability. Your time around the mountain will not be short of ‘pit-stops’ because of the many bars and restaurant’s located right next to the pistes.
Due to the kilometres of piste we would highly recommend a ski guide for your first days ski (average cost 500 CHF per day). This way you will gain confidence of the resort as well as finding your favorite runs quickly. The guide will also be able to take you the best skiable route back to your private luxury chalet or apartment rental!
